5 Lab tests often missed, but can change everything.

Understanding your body’s unique needs is key to optimizing your health. While your signs and symptoms can tell us a great deal, lab testing provides valuable insight into what’s happening beneath the surface. It helps clarify underlying imbalances, establish meaningful baselines, and track progress over time.
As a naturopath, testing allows me to offer more personalized care, address root cause and support a proactive, preventative approach to your health. Below are some of the key tests I often recommend in addition to standard blood work:

Vitamin D
Vitamin D plays an essential role in calcium absorption and bone health, supporting immune function, regulating inflammation, and influencing mood and energy levels.
In Canada, deficiency is incredibly common. However, testing is still important because your individual needs may vary. Knowing your baseline level helps determine the right dosage for you. In practice, I may recommend dosages anywhere from 2,000 IU to 10,000 IU daily, depending on current levels and overall health.
It’s also important to recheck your levels after about three months of supplementation. This allows us to ensure you’ve reached an optimal range (typically 100–150 nmol/L) and to adjust to a maintenance dose accordingly.

ESR & CRP (Inflammation Markers)
ESR (erythrocyte sedimentation rate) and CRP (C-reactive protein) are two commonly used markers of inflammation in the body.
CRP rises quickly in response to acute inflammation, such as infection or injury, and typically returns to normal within a few days. ESR, on the other hand, reflects more chronic or long-standing inflammation, which may be seen in conditions like autoimmune disease or inflammatory disorders.
While these tests don’t identify the exact cause of inflammation, they can alert us to its presence and guide further investigation. I often recommend one or both of these tests when someone is experiencing persistent pain, fatigue, or difficulty recovering from illness.

Fasting Insulin
Fasting insulin is a powerful tool for early detection and prevention. It is the hormone responsible for regulating blood sugar. High levels indicate insulin resistance and problems with blood sugar control, often long before blood sugar or HbA1c levels become abnormal.
This gives us an opportunity to intervene early, rather than waiting until a diagnosis of diabetes is made.
Higher insulin levels (even within the upper end of the “normal” range) are often associated with symptoms like sugar cravings, weight gain, and fatigue after meals. Over time, they may increase the risk of conditions such as type 2 diabetes, fatty liver disease, cardiovascular disease, and cognitive decline.

Comprehensive Thyroid Panel
The thyroid plays a central role in regulating metabolism, energy production, growth, and overall vitality. When symptoms such as fatigue, weight gain, dry skin, hair loss, low mood, or low appetite are present, the thyroid is an important area to investigate.
Conventional testing often includes only TSH (thyroid-stimulating hormone), which reflects the brain’s signal to the thyroid, but doesn’t provide a complete picture. I typically recommend a more comprehensive panel that includes free T4 and free T3, the hormones produced by the thyroid that directly influence metabolism.
If there is a family history of thyroid or autoimmune conditions, testing thyroid antibodies (anti-TPO and anti-TG) can also help identify immune-related causes of dysfunction.

Hormone Panel
Sex hormones are frequently overlooked in conventional care, despite their widespread impact on overall health. Beyond reproductive health, hormones influence metabolism, blood sugar regulation, cardiovascular health, mood, cognition, and the health of our skin, muscles, and bones.
With properly timed testing, we can gain valuable insight into concerns such as irregular or painful periods, PMS, and fertility in premenopausal women. For men and postmenopausal women, optimizing hormone levels can significantly improve energy, mood, and libido, while also supporting metabolic health and reducing the risk of chronic disease.
Understanding your sex hormones and its relationship to your mood, sleep, energy, sex drive, metabolism and overall health is essential, and testing helps us establish a baseline to make changes so you can experience the best you can be and feel.
Next Steps
If you’ve noticed changes such as gradual weight gain, increasing aches and pains, persistent fatigue, or other unexplained symptoms, it may be time to revisit your lab work.
Review when your last blood tests were completed, and consider booking a naturopathic appointment to assess your results and explore additional testing where appropriate.
By looking beyond standard labs and assessing factors like hormone balance, nutrient status, and inflammation, we can uncover hidden imbalances and take a more informed, proactive approach to your health. With the right data, you can move from feeling stuck with vague symptoms to truly understanding your body and feeling your best. Schedule your next appointment so we can discuss lab tests that may be helpful to understanding your health.
